This is our signature experience! You get to sit back and relax as a passenger in our comfortable tour vehicle while we deliver the daily mail along the historic Whanganui River Road. How long does the tour last and what time do we start?
Timing: The tour operates Monday to Friday.
Duration: It lasts approximately 6 hours.
Schedule: We depart at 7:30 AM and return at approximately 1:30 PM.

What is the Discover Te Awa Tupua experience? It combines three experiences in one day — the Mail Tour, a 2-hour cycle from the Jerusalem/Hiruharama convent, and a 2-hour canoe trip through Whanganui National Park from Koriniti to Atene. It's guided by people with a deep connection to the river and land, sharing local stories and manaakitanga (hospitality).
How much does Discover Te Awa Tupua cost? The guided experience (with e-bike hire and canoe with Awa navigators) is $430 per person. A self-guided version — which includes the Mail Tour, bike hire, and a self-guided canoe or kayak — is $270 per person and requires a medium fitness level and some kayaking experience.
When does the Discover Te Awa Tupua tour run? Monday to Sunday, departing at 7:30 am from your Whanganui accommodation and returning around 4:30 pm (6–7 hours). A minimum of 4 persons is required for the guided version; 2 persons for the self-guided version.

What bikes are available to hire? Mountain bikes are available at $80 per day and e-bikes (electric mountain bikes) at $100 per day. Bike hire includes delivery and pickup, a helmet, and a basic puncture repair kit. All bikes are serviced before each trip. Let the team know your height when booking so they can get the right frame size for you.
Do I need to be an experienced cyclist? A reasonable level of fitness helps, particularly for the full single-day ride. The River Road is a stunning but real sealed backcountry route. If you're unsure, get in touch and the team can help match you to the right option.
Shuttles
Yes. Shuttles run from Whanganui to Ohakune from $190 per person (including your bike), with a minimum of 2 persons. Shuttles to Pipiriki are $110 per person Monday–Friday or $180 per person on weekends, also with a minimum of 2 persons.
Can you transfer my luggage while I cycle? Absolutely. Luggage transfers from Whanganui to Pipiriki are $30 per bag, available Monday to Friday only ( not weekends).
Do you offer services outside of Monday–Friday? The team is generally on the River Road Monday to Friday, but in summer — if minimum passenger numbers are met — there's more flexibility. Get in touch directly to discuss your needs and we will do our best to make it work.
