Explore the Whanganui River Valley along the road, a place filled with history, geology, and nature. This trip is a great way to see the best parts of the area, especially lovely in Autumn and Winter. Let Whanganui Tours, your local tour operator, guide you! We'll take you to the top of the valley or drop you off wherever you feel comfortable, so you can explore at your own pace. You'll discover the rich history and culture of the local Māori tribe, Te Awa Tupua, and learn why the river was so important for transport, food, and spiritual well-being. Hear stories about the early settlers and the paddle steamers that travelled deep into the Whanganui region. For the final part of the journey from Upokongaro, you can cycle into the city on the new cycle path, part of the Mountains to Sea trail. Or, on certain days, you can hop on the Wairua, one of the original paddle steamers, for a taste of the past. Pick up your bike again and finish your tour at Castlecliff, where you'll find a beach and a cafe. Whanganui Tours offers a unique way to experience the region with our fantastic cycle tours.
